Shocking Mobile-First Healthcare Statistics

A new report reveals that there have been 480 healthcare data breaches in 2023 so far, with over 25% of Americans impacted. The estimated number of patients affected is 87 million this year, over double the 37 million in 2022. These staggering statistics paint a concerning picture of the state of healthcare data security.

In another recent survey, 88% of healthcare organizations disclosed that they experienced an average of 40 cyberattacks in the past 12 months, making it abundantly clear that safeguarding patient information is more critical than ever.

The average total cost of a cyberattack has surged to nearly $5 million, marking a 13% increase from the previous year. This cost increase, as reported by the Ponemon Institute not only strains patient care but also adds financial burdens to healthcare organizations. The need for efficient security controls has never been more apparent.

Furthermore, 81% of survey respondents stated that their organizations had already enabled remote access to electronic patient records. With the increasing demand for employees to access data quickly, it has become more challenging for organizations to implement effective security controls, as highlighted in Verizon's 2022 Mobile Security Index (MSI) report.

Penalties for non-compliance with HIPAA regulations are substantial, ranging from civil monetary penalties of $100 to $50,000 per violation, depending on the level of culpability. This underscores the importance of strict adherence to these regulations and the dire consequences of failing to do so.

The consequences of these cyberattacks are severe. According to 'The Insecurity of Connected Devices in Healthcare 2022' report, 45% of cyberattacks resulted in an adverse impact on patients. This includes 54% of cases where healthcare organizations reported the inability to provide patient services, 48% involved the theft of patient records, and 26% resulted in delivering inappropriate therapy or treatment to patients.
